UPDATE: Man found shot on I-65 South in Franklin identified

The Johnson County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was found shot on Interstate 65 in Franklin Thursday morning.

The body of Derrick Allen Janney, 23, of Indianapolis, was found with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds near the 91 mile-marker of I-65 southbound before 8 a.m. Thursday. The manner of Janney’s death has not yet been determined, the Johnson County Coroner’s Office said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, the coroner’s office says.

1:05 p.m. UPDATE:

The right southbound lane of Interstate 65 has reopened near the Franklin exit, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

10:12 a.m. UPDATE: 

Police officials say they are preliminarily not ruling the death of a man on Interstate 65 as a homicide.

Indiana State Police detectives are now on the scene of the incident reported near the 91 mile-marker on I-65 south between Hurricane Road and East King Street in Franklin. An adult male was found dead with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, ISP spokesperson Sgt. John Perrine said in a 9:38 a.m. tweet.

“Preliminarily, we are not ruling this a homicide,” Perrine said.

The right southbound lane remains blocked for at least the next two hours, according to INDOT.

A death investigation is underway on Interstate 65 South near the 91 mile-marker.

An incident resulting in death occurred Thursday morning on the roadway south of Whiteland and north of Franklin, said Sheriff Duane Burgess. Traffic is slowed and one lane is closed while first responders are at the scene, he said.

Indiana Department of Transportation has issued a traffic alert for a medical emergency in the area where the incident occurred, between Hurricane Road and State Road 44 on I-65.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Johnson County Coroner’s Office and various local police and fire agencies are responding to the scene.

As the incident occurred on the interstate, Indiana State Police will be the lead investigators on the fatal incident.

People should use caution in the area.
