College notebook: Herron pitches Morehead State to victory

Morehead State junior pitcher Grant Herron, a former Center Grove baseball player, permitted two hits and struck out nine batters in five innings in the team’s 3-2 win at Norfolk State.

Center Grove

The Alabama baseball team is off to a 3-0 start after sweeping the series against Richmond. Junior second baseman Bryce Eblin contributed a hit, two runs scored and two more driven in.

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Drue Young worked 1 1/3 innings of middle relief, striking out two, as the Wildcats baseball team lost at Lindsey Wilson, 11-10, in 10 innings.

Southern Indiana softball won two of three games at the Evansville Classic, with junior infielder Lexi Fair singling in the team’s 3-2 win against Green Bay.

Senior guard Spencer Piercefield led the way with 16 points and six assists as Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball ended the regular season with an 80-75 loss at Mt. Vernon Nazarene. He added 21 points and four assists in a 78-74 overtime loss to Taylor.

Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis had 26 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for Indiana in its 71-68 win over visiting Illinois. He finished with 19 points, seven boards and five assists in IU’s 80-65 loss at Michigan State.

Purdue guard Cassidy Hardin had five rebounds and three assists in the team’s 83-60 loss at No. 2 Indiana. She finished with 11 points in an 86-62 home victory against Penn State.

Senior guard Emma Utterback tied for team scoring honors with 21 points in Vermont’s 85-73 conquest of visiting NJIT. She had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a 67-54 victory at Binghamton.

Truman State junior Claire Rake scored seven points in the team’s 67-51 victory at Quincy.

Bentley guard Ella Thompson had a team-high 19 points to go along with three assists in the team’s 70-43 victory at Franklin Pierce. She had 17 points and five rebounds in a 72-51 win over visiting American International.

Whiteland

Sophomore Quinten Gillespie won his No. 3 doubles match but lost at No. 4 singles as Southern Indiana men’s tennis lost to Eastern Kentucky, 5-2.

Morehead State baseball opened the season with a 7-6 win at Norfolk State. Senior pitcher Luke Helton got the win, allowing eight hits and striking out four in his five innings.

Franklin College men’s basketball lost at Hanover, 83-73, in the first round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Senior Carter Crowe led the Grizzlies with 17 points.

Manchester guard Logan Willoughby had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the men’s basketball team’s 78-73 win at Anderson.

Franklin

Eli Cochrane took second in the 800-meter run in 2:00.76 as Franklin College men’s track and field took part in the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes indoor meet. He was also part of the runner-up 4×400 relay that included Drew McGaha and posted a time of 3:28.26.

Radford freshman guard Ashlyn Traylor had 17 points, four boards and four assists in a 65-63 loss to Longwood. She had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in a 65-55 win over High Point.

Greenwood

IU East sophomore Julia Arruda placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run in 19 minutes, 51.44 seconds and was seventh in the 1,000 in 3:23.26 as her team participated in the River States Conference indoor track championships.

University of Indianapolis catcher Lexy Rees supplied her squad five hits and five RBIs as the Greyhounds won three of four games at the Music City Invitational. Teammate Dominique Proctor had totals of three hits and three RBIs in the series.

Taylor senior baseball player T.J. Bass doubled and homered in Taylor’s 15-5 victory over IU Southeast at the Southeast Rumble tournament.

Indiana junior wrestler Nick Willham won his match at 197 pounds, 2-1, as the Hoosiers won at Chattanooga, 32-3.

Junior Ethan Gray won at No. 2 doubles for Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis in its 6-1 loss at Indiana Tech. Gray lost his No. 4 singles match, 6-1, 6-4.

Franklin College senior Nick Patton finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.13 seconds at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes indoor track and field meet. Junior Mallory Watson was part of the women’s 4×400 relay that placed second in 4:26.86.

Indian Creek

Marian sophomore Luci Woodrum had a 12th-place finish in the mile run as the Knights women’s track and field team won the Crossroads League title for a second consecutive season.

Freshman Emily Todor scored a run for Butler softball in a 7-3 loss to Florida International at the Panther Invitational.

Jared DeHart, a senior guard for West Florida, scored eight points as the Argonauts downed visiting Montevallo, 102-79.

Greenwood Christian

Champ McCorkle and Styles McCorkle each scored two points for Wabash College in a 75-74 loss at Wooster. Champ collected two rebounds and Styles scored three points in the team’s 91-71 home win over Hiram.

Roncalli

Ball State women’s basketball lost at Northern Illinois, 84-77, though Cardinals sophomore guard Maddie Bischoff (Greenwood) did finish with 11 points. She had six points, three rebounds and three assists in an 80-49 win against Western Michigan.
