Greenwood man arrested after stalking woman, standoff with police

A Greenwood man was arrested after a reported burglary escalated to a two-hour standoff with police Sunday.

Elijah Jacob Brissey, 24, was arrested on felony charges of burglary/breaking and entering, intimidation, pointing a firearm, stalking violations, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of cocaine and possession of a Schedule I controlled substance. He was also arrested on misdemeanor charges of invasion of privacy, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Formal charges have not yet been filed by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Greenwood police were called to the 1200 block of Beacon Pointe Drive around 7:09 a.m. Sunday on a report of a burglary in progress. A woman had called 911 to say Brissey had tried to break into her apartment and pointed a gun at her before fleeing the scene, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The woman also told police Brissey violated a protection order because he came to her apartment, according to the report.

Police found Brissey’s car information and went to an address associated with him in the Barton Farms subdivision. They found his car, and it was reportedly evident the car had recently been moved because it didn’t have frost on the windows like other nearby cars did, the report says.

Officers surrounded the house and ordered everyone out. Two people left the home and said Brissey and a child were still inside. Because Brissey reportedly did not comply with the orders, the SWAT team was deployed.

After two hours, around 9:30 a.m., hostage negotiators were able to make contact with Brissey. He agreed to let the child out of the house, and officers later took Brissey into custody, the report shows.

Brissey told police he had not left the home since last Friday, and complained of pain from a cut during the arrest. He was then taken to an Indianapolis hospital, and was later medically cleared, the report shows.

While at the hospital, police received a search warrant for his car. They found drug paraphernalia, marijuana wax THC, fentanyl, mushrooms, multiple rifles and a handgun. The pistol, which was reportedly used at the apartment, had one round in the chamber, according to the report.

Police also found an AR-15-style rifle with no identifiable markings or serial number under Brissey’s bed. It also had a hollowed-out trigger chamber, the report shows.

Brissey said he was at the apartment to scope out of the area and see whose car was at the woman’s apartment. The woman described Brissey’s behavior as “stalkerish” to police, the report shows.

He said he did not have a gun on him and knocked on the window using a phone. He also told police the window to the apartment was already torn up when he arrived, according to the report.

Brissey told detectives he was a “type of jealous person” and that if he had a gun, he probably would’ve made a bad decision. He later said he refused to leave the Barton Farms home because he figured the woman called the police on him, the report says.

Brissey was taken to the Johnson County jail on Sunday. His bond is set at $86,200.
