College notebook: Utterback leads Vermont basketball during win streak

Senior guard Emma Utterback had 14 points, four rebounds and five assists as Vermont women’s basketball completed its regular season on a 14-game win streak thanks to a 64-41 win over Bryant. The Catamounts faced the same opponent in the opener of the America East playoffs, winning 56-49 as Utterback, a former Center Grove player, finished with 10 points, eight boards and three steals.

Center Grove

Bentley guard Ella Thompson helped her team win the first two games at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, scoring eight points against St. Michael’s and 13 in a quarterfinal victory over Franklin Pierce. The senior was also named third team all-conference.

Indiana men’s basketball won at Purdue, 79-71, with senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. He had 26 points, 13 boards, five assists and four steals in a 90-68 loss to visiting Iowa.

University of Indianapolis senior guard Ben Nicoson finished with nine points in a 78-65 win at Missouri S&T as the Greyhounds completed the regular season with a record of 25-3.

Junior catcher Adam Taylor had a single for Franklin College baseball in a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s (Minnesota). In a 3-2 win, junior designated hitter Anthony Smith singled and drove in a run. The squad improved to 3-0 with a 9-5 triumph against Moravian as senior pitcher Jackson Young started and worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and fanning five batters.

Freshman second baseman Tyler Cerny singled for the Indiana baseball team in its 5-2 victory at Texas. He had a single, scored two runs and was credited for stealing three bases in a 13-2 win at Butler.

Senior first baseman Mike Wyman delivered a solo home run for the St. Leo baseball team in its 7-3 loss to Barry.

Alabama second baseman Bryce Eblin had two singles, driving in a pair of runs, in a 10-6 win over High Point. The junior added a sacrifice fly as the Crimson Tide completed a three-game sweep with a 4-2 victory. Eblin singled twice, doubled and drove in four runs in a 17-3 defeat of Jacksonville State.

Pitcher Grant Herron tossed the first five innings for Morehead State baseball in a 12-3 win against St. Peter’s, giving up six hits and striking out eight.

Sophomore Drue Young got the start for Indiana Wesleyan baseball as it lost at NAIA No. 6 Faulkner, 8-7. Young pitched six innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine.

Marian men’s golf kicked off its spring schedule with a second-place performance at the Showdown at the Legends in South Carolina. Sophomore Brandon Heffner tied for 10th overall with scores of 82, 71 and 71 for a 224 total. Teammates Luke Beetz and Sam Slaughter tied for 16th and 29th.

Greenwood

Sophomore Emily Bonser placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 12.43 meters for the University of Indianapolis women’s track and field team at the Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor meet.

Junior Ethan Gray won his No. 3 doubles match but lost at No. 4 singles as Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis lost a 4-2 decision to Oakland City.

Franklin College senior diver Faith Jackson competed at the NCAA Regional, placing 15th in the one-meter event with 353.25 points and 24th in three-meter with 337.20.

Taylor freshman women’s basketball player Quinn Kelly had three rebounds and a steal as the team finished its season with a 61-46 loss to Grace College in the first round of the Crossroads League tournament.

The Taylor baseball team won three of four games against Olivet Nazarene, with senior outfielder T.J. Bass finishing the series 9 of 15 at the plate. The former Greenwood player produced three doubles, two home runs and drove in a total of six runs.

Indian Creek

Franklin College pitcher Dylan Sprong spun a complete game in the Grizzlies’ 3-2 win over St. Mary’s (Minnesota), going all seven innings, permitting seven hits and striking out nine.

Freshman Braxton Christie tied for ninth place individually with scores of 71 and 79 as Franklin College men’s golf placed third of seven teams at the Music City Invitational.

Whiteland

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton improved to 2-0 on the season as the Eagles downed St. Peter’s, 8-2. Helton went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out 10 batters.

The Franklin College men’s golf team opened its spring season by placing third out of seven teams at the Music City Shootout. Junior Zach Ricketts tied for 17th individually, shooting rounds of 72 and 81.

Franklin

Senior Javan Johnson picked up medalist honors with scores of 71, 68 and 77 as Taylor men’s golf finished third at the Showdown at the Legends. Huntington also took part in the event, placing 10th as a team while Quin Edwards tied for 59th individually with a three-round score of 250.

Franklin College diver Gauge Creech finished ninth on the three-meter board at the NCAA Regional, scoring 430.05 points. The senior took 11th in one-meter competition with a score of 419.35.

Radford womens basketball completed the regular season with a 66-61 win over Campbell. Freshman guard Ashlyn Traylor scored a team-high 19 points to go along with her five assists and four steals.

Greenwood Christian

Indiana Wesleyan sophomore Izzy Reed scored five points in a reserve role during a 95-76 semifinal victory over St. Francis at the Crossroads League women’s basketball tournament.
