John S. Metzger

GREENWOOD, IN

Danville – John S. Metzger, Jr., 86, of Greenwood, IN, formerly of Brecksville, OH, (Danville, IL, Catlin, IL, Livermore, CA, and Gardnerville, NV) passed away at 5:24 PM on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis. He was born May 5, 1936 in East Cleveland, OH to John S. Metzger, Sr. and Janette J. Metzger. He married Juanita Annette Wallace on April 2, 1960 in Danville. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2020.

He is survived by three children, Laurie (Metzger) Brooks of Shelbyville, IN, Mark (Cyndi) Metzger of Northford, CT, and David Metzger of Lathrop, CA; five grandchildren, Andrew (Olivia) Metzger, Alyssa Metzger, Nolan Metzger, Colton Metzger, and Kim Whitaker; five great grandchildren, Shelbie Whitaker, Bailee Whitaker, Erik Whitaker, Callie Metzger, Cole Metzger, and one more on the way; and one cousin, Roger Wadsworth.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ralph “Roger” Brooks.

John served his country in the United States Air Force. He attended Bowling Green University where he majored in music and went on to work as an HVAC Technician until his retirement.

Jack was a member of Second Church of Christ in Danville, IL for over 15 years, where he was a deacon and an organist. He was a recent member of Greenwood Christian Church in Greenwood, IN and he helped found the Dublin Christian Church in Dublin, CA. He loved to camp with his beloved wife of 60 years, and they had visited all 48 contiguous states. Jack was a very talented organist, and his music was beloved by many. He was also known for his mechanical skills; he worked on everything from B52 bomber engines, diesel engines, farm equipment, and all sorts of heating and air products.

A service to celebrate the life of John S. Metzger, Jr. will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834. Pastor Matt Giebler will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 1-2 PM prior to the service on Saturday, also at Sunset in Danville.
