Franklin man to serve 30.5 years for dealing drugs

A Franklin man will serve more than 30 years in prison for dealing drugs in Johnson County.

Steven Heady, 52, was sentenced to 30.5 years in prison by Johnson County Superior Court 3 Judge Douglas Cummins on Tuesday. Heady previously pled guilty to the charges on Jan. 25.

The charges stem from two different indictments where Heady was charged with five counts of dealing methamphetamine, ranging from Level 2 to Level 5 felonies, and one count of dealing a controlled substance, a Level 3 felony.

A bulk of his sentence, 26 years, was from a case filed last May. The deals took place on various days in March 2022 and involved him selling varying amounts of methamphetamine. Heady will serve 22 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with another four years on probation for this case, prosecutors say.

The second case was filed in September 2021. Heady will serve an additional 4.5 years in prison for dealing psilocybin, often referred to by its street name “magic mushrooms,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

Deputy Prosecutor Megan Smither argued for an aggravated sentence because of the serious nature of the charges. Meth is an extremely addictive drug and it wreaks havoc on the lives and bodies of users, she said in a statement.

Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said he was pleased Heady received “a serious sentence for this serious crime.”

“We have seen too many deaths of late resulting from drug dealers selling poison to our citizens,” Hamner said in a statement. “Make no mistake, a sentence like this sends a powerful message that drug dealing is not tolerated here.”
