UPDATE: Man fatally shot outside Greenwood restaurant

Editor’s note: The police initially reported that an argument occurred prior to the shooting. However, after more evidence gathering police later said there was not an argument before the shooting. The story has been updated to remove references to the argument at the family’s request.

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m. March 9

Police say a man has died following a shooting outside a Greenwood restaurant.

The man was identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Timothy A. Sannito, 52, Thursday morning. He was pronounced dead at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis Wednesday night, said Jim Ison, Greenwood police chief.

Right now, detectives do not have a suspect. But they did apply for search warrants in connection with the investigation, he said.

Incidents like this can happen anywhere, and the city is still safe, Ison said. Greenwood averages about 1-2 murders a year, while neighboring Indianapolis often pushes over 200.

“We do a pretty good job of keeping the violence and violent crimes low here,” he said. “… Unfortunately, it seems over the past few years we’re seeing more people displaying poor conflict resolution and using handguns in disagreements and arguments.”
