Franklin College

Baseball takes series finale

After a Saturday doubleheader split against Albion, Franklin College wrapped up its first home series of the spring with a 5-3 triumph on Sunday afternoon. Sean Sullivan and Tysen Lipscomb each had three hits for the Grizzlies (6-4), while Adam Taylor drove in a pair of runs.

Women’s lax falls to Fighting Bees

Franklin College took an early two-goal lead but came up short against visiting St. Ambrose on Sunday morning, 18-6. Victoria Simmons led the Grizzlies (2-2) with three goals, while Baleigh Riddle scored twice and Riley Rice made 16 saves in a losing effort.

Royals open by splitting four

Roncalli got its season started by winning two of four matches in tournament play at Cathedral on Saturday. The Royals defeated Avon and Cincinnati St. Xavier to advance into the gold pool, where they lost to the host Fighting Irish and Fishers.

Locals shine at Senior State

Center Grove Aquatic Club’s Lara Phipps led a contingent of Johnson County swimmers competing at the ISI Senior Short Course Championships, which concluded Sunday at Pike. Phipps was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle — losing by just .18 seconds — and also placed third in the 200-yard backstroke, fourth in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly, fifth in the 500 free and sixth in the 50 free.

CGAC’s boys also fared well, with the 200 freestyle relay team of Ethan Martin, Henry Lyness, Evan Hernandez and Sam Smith placing second. Individually, Martin was fifth in the 100 and 200 freestyles and sixth in the 50 free, Lyness was fifth in the 200 backstroke, sixth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 individual medley and Smith had four top-10 finishes, including fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and eighth in the 200 butterfly. CGAC placed fourth as a team with 1,440.5 points.

Chloe Vitatoe of Franklin Regional Swim Team was sixth in the 400 IM. FRST finished 17th in the team standings.
