GPL Column: Spend your Spring Break at GPL

Are you tired of cold weather?

Super ready for green grass, sunshine, and short sleeves?

We are too, and we’re working hard to get you in the mood for spring. I know lots of people will try to go out of town for the week, but that’s not always in the cards. Not to worry though, as a trip to Greenwood Public Library can help you create a memorable staycation this year.

Most of my vacations are staycations. I am a notorious binge reader/watcher, and I can easily spend my entire day vegging on the couch with my cats. And though I’ve read many good books and watched many excellent Netflix series that way, memories of those times are few and far between. But when I get out and go somewhere with friends and family — those are the vacations I remember and memories I cherish. And we don’t even have to go far — just visiting a city park, local shops, or even (you guessed it) the public library can make for a fun adventure. Especially since the Greenwood Public Library is right here in downtown Greenwood, and we’ve got a ton of stuff for your whole family to do.

You can get crafty in The Studio Makerspace. You can get ready for Easter by making bunny bait or come make a wooden airplane. Or come relax and help with our giant coloring sheet. In addition to these drop-in activities, don’t forget about our art and STEM kits available for use in The Studio or come learn how to use our community equipment such as the Glowforge.

Drop by the library on March 24th to try out Lifesize Games. Make sure to bring extra friends or family, so you can play together. Stretch yourself out with Giant Twister, test your problem-solving skills with Connect 4, or build a Giant Jenga tower just to watch it fall.

Looking for something more laid-back? Come watch the classic fantasy adventure movie “The Princess Bride” in a whole new way — with a script and props to help you join in the adventure.

The next week you’ll be able to visit the Adult Services department anytime to play Mini Golf. You can work on your golf swing safely indoors where the weather is always nice.

Spring Break memories you make are some of the most fun you’ll ever have. This year, make your staycation memorable with a trip to GPL. And if your couch is calling to you, don’t forget to come stock up on books and movies. Either way — we hope you’ll visit the library and make some memories.
