Golf

Shepherd makes cut at Augusta

Erica Shepherd shot a 1-under-par 71 in Thursday’s second round at Champions Retreat to finish safely above the cut line at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. The Center Grove graduate and Duke senior has made the cut in three of the event’s four years, with a best finish of 16th in 2021.

Shepherd opened by bogeying the par-4 first hole for the second day in a row, but she responded with birdies on the third and ninth holes, both par-5s. She got to -2 for the day with another birdie on the 14th hole before giving one shot back on the par-4 16th.

With a two-day total of 145 (+1), Shepherd sits in a tie for 21st going into Saturday’s final round at Augusta National, which will be televised on NBC beginning at noon. Rose Zhang, the world’s top-ranked amateur, sits atop the field at -13 after following her first-round 66 with a 7-under 65.

Softball

Warriors defeat Edinburgh

Kiley Sullivan pitched a complete game and hit a two-run homer to lift Whiteland to a 5-2 home win over Edinburgh on Thursday. Halle Nett added an RBI double for the Warriors (1-1); MacKenzie Bieker and Elizabeth Hernandez drove in runs for the Lancers (0-2).

Baseball

Lancers edged by Eagles

Edinburgh suffered a 5-3 setback at Brown County on Thursday. Jarrett Turner scored two runs and Dakota Graw had an RBI for the Lancers (0-2).

Franklin College

Softball splits with Hope

Franklin College bounced back from a 6-5 loss in the first half of Thursday’s doubleheader with a 5-1 victory over Hope in the nightcap. Annie Kluemper had five hits on the day for the Grizzlies (15-5), while Kaylee Stewart and Sydney Bostic each drove in a pair of runs in the second game.

Women’s lacrosse suffers setback

Franklin College dropped a 20-10 home match against Augustana. Baleigh Riddle and Victoria Simmons scored four goals apiece for the Grizzlies (2-4).
