The Town of Whiteland was placed under a boil water advisory Sunday and will remain under this order until further notice.
The power outage caused by the storms and tornadoes on Friday night caused the water tower to drain and lose pressure needed to treat the water servicing the town, said Carmen Young, the town’s planning and community development director. The town turned off the water Saturday morning, and residents’ water service returned as the power came back Sunday.
As water started to return to the tower, town employees noticed leaks in various water mains, including a fire hydrant that was snapped by debris, Young said.
Residents should boil their water for at least five minutes before consuming it. A timeline for when the advisory will be lifted is unknown at this time, Young said.
The town is working with Indiana American Water to continue testing the water, and when the water is safe, officials will lift the order. The town of New Whiteland is also assisting with assessed damages.
