State senator endorses Myers for Greenwood mayor

A local state senator is endorsing the mayor of Greenwood in his reelection bid.

Indiana State Sen. Jack Sandlin, R-Indianapolis, has endorsed Mayor Mark Myers for Greenwood mayor. Myers is seeking a fourth term in office and is being challenged in the Republican primary by Joe Hubbard, a local businessman and former Center Grove School Board member.

Sandlin has known Myers and his family since the 1980s, and like Myers, is a Greenwood Community High School graduate. Myers has dedicated his career to service, from his family’s ambulance business in the greater Greenwood area, to his work as a law enforcement officer and now as the city’s mayor, Sandlin said.

“Mark’s selfless service is apparent and watching him serve the citizens of the city of Greenwood furthers my respect for his leadership abilities,” Sandlin said. “Mayor Myers is a giving person and those who have benefited from his kindness and service know how rare those qualities are.”

Sandlin says Myers has committed to continue his dedication and service philosophy for the citizens of Greenwood in his reelection bid. Describing Myers as a good man and fellow conservative, Sandlin says he supports him without hesitation.

Myers did not ask Sandlin for the endorsement, but Sandlin wanted to do it because he’s known Myers, his family and his background, he said.

“I think he’s a genuinely good person,” Sandlin said. “I think it’s important to have people who are community-minded. I think Johnson County is blessed to have community-minded public servants.”

Myers was proud to receive the endorsement, and happy that Sandlin had faith and trust in him, he said. He was also taken aback.

“I’m just taken aback that a state senator, who we both have a law enforcement background and we both are southsiders, that he’s got the faith in me and wanted to come out and do that endorsement on his own,” Myers said. “That just speaks volumes to me that he appreciates what we’re doing in Greenwood, how Greenwood’s going and how my whole administrative team is doing a great job.”

Sandlin was one of the people who asked Myers to run for mayor in 2010. He has also always been a good sounding board for Myers, he said.

“Jack and I, we can talk about anything. We don’t always agree with everything,” Myers said. “But we can walk away from a conversation, not agree with each other, and still have total respect for each other.”
