Upcoming Greenwood Community Band concert moved to new venue

The Greater Greenwood Community Band’s next concert has been moved to a new venue due to construction.

“Springtime Symphonic Serenade” was originally set to take place at Greenwood Community High School. However, due to planned work at the high school, the concert will now take place at the Franklin Community High School Performing Arts Center, 2600 Cumberland Drive, Franklin, on April 16 at 2 p.m., according to the band.

The free concert will feature the premiere of commissioned work by Thomas Day, the band says. The new work, titled “Our Gallery of Memories” is in honor of the late Valeria “Val” Pemberton, an avid oboe player in the group. She also served as the group’s librarian for many years, and was also married to the band’s previous assistant director, Ora Pemberton. In honor of her dedication and service to the ensemble, the band voted to commission this piece to celebrate her life.

As the Pembertons both went to Butler University, a decision to coordinate with Butler’s music department was “a no brainer.” The band heard multiple submissions but ultimately felt Thomas captured Val Pemberton’s essence the most. He also paid homage to Pembertons’ history by including Butler in the composition, according to band officials.
