Southport Road work for I-69 project starts Sunday

Crews will begin switching Southport Road/State Road 37 traffic into a new phase starting Sunday night to allow for the construction of mainline I-69 and completion of the Southport Road interchange, Indiana Department of Transportation officials announced Friday. During this time, access to State Road 37 from Old Southport Road west of the highway and the existing signal and access to State Road 37 at Banta Road in Marion County will be removed, INDOT officials say.

Southport Road to Southbound 37

The new southbound on-ramp from Southport Road to State Road 37 will open with a temporary traffic signal to allow entry to State Road 37. The traffic signal will be synchronized with the existing signal at the intersection of State Road 37 and Old Southport Road.

Southport Road to Northbound 37

For seven days, the Southport Road on-ramp to northbound State Road 37 will be closed as crews finish the ramp and tie it into the new northbound travel lanes. During this time, northbound motorists will be detoured from Harding Street to State Road 37.

Northbound 37 to Southport Road

State Road 37 northbound to Southport Road will use a portion of the new exit ramp followed by a stretch of temporary pavement that connects to Old Southport Road. Motorists should be sure to slow down to safely exit State Road 37.

Southbound 37 to Southport Road

The southbound State Road 37 ramp onto Southport Road will remain open throughout the duration of the closure.

At the conclusion of the seven-day closure, all Southport Road ramps will be open and all State Road 37 traffic will be moved onto the new pavement, INDOT officials say.

The speed limit throughout this section of the I-69 Finish Line project remains 45 mph.
