UPDATE: Fatal accident under investigation in rural Franklin

Officials have now identified the person killed in a fatal single-vehicle crash on the 6000 block of East County Road 400 South near Franklin Saturday morning.

The person was identified Saturday afternoon as Kaylarees R. Rutherford, 20, of Franklin, according to a Johnson County Coroner’s Office news release.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash, the release says.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle was occupied by three people, including Rutherford. The other two people were transported to Indianapolis-area hospitals. Updates on their conditions were not available Saturday afternoon.

ORIGINAL STORY: 

A fatal, single-vehicle accident occurred early Saturday morning in the 6600 block of East County Road 400 South, Franklin.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Amity Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 4:44 a.m. At the scene, they found the car with all wheels up resting against a tree, with a powerline down nearby, a photo of the crashed car shows.

Three people were in the vehicle, including the driver. One occupant in the vehicle was transported to Methodist Hospital via Lifeline and another occupant was transported to Eskenazi Hospital via ambulance. One occupant was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The name of the deceased person is being withheld pending family notifications.

Accident investigators were still at the scene collecting evidence and conducting their investigation at 6:30 a.m. During the investigation, County Road 400 South between U.S. 31 and County Road 600 East will be closed, the sheriff’s office says.

The accident also knocked out power in the area.
