Greenwood Christian baseball wins at Edinburgh

Greenwood Christian baseball snapped a three-game losing streak in style.

The visiting Cougars pounded out 20 hits and pasted Edinburgh 21-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the fifth time this season Greenwood Christian (8-6-1) scored 15 or more runs and they were just two shy of the 23 they scored on Seton Catholic earlier this month.

This game was over after the top half of the first inning, as GCA slapped out nine hits and scored a dozen runs. After that, the Cougars pretty much took it easy on the Lancers by not stealing, taking several pitches and holding runners to a base after a hit.

It was the kind of game the Cougars needed after losing a heartbreaking one the previous night against Bishop Chatard in which they gave up 14 runs after leading most of the game.

“We needed this win after (Monday),” Greenwood Christian coach Doug Hagist said. “We had Bishop Chatard down 6-0 after five and then we had a bad inning and lost. The boys came in with a good frame of mind.”

While the Cougars were pounding the ball and rounding the bases, the Lancers didn’t exactly help their cause, committing seven errors.

It was the fourth time the Lancers (2-11) have been shut out this season.

The two bright spots for Edinburgh were singles from senior Riley Peavler and leadoff man Austin Brockman in the third inning.

Greenwood Christian, meanwhile, had plenty to cheer about. Senior shortstop Jake Potter led the way with four hits, four runs and an RBI. Pitcher Colton Flint had three hits, including an impressive two doubles in the first inning when the Cougars nearly batted around the lineup twice. Flint also scored twice and had three RBIs.

Also getting multiple hits for the Cougars was Caden Camden with two singles and two RBIs, Brandt Kieninger with a single, double and three RBIs, and Wyatt Schlageter with two singles.

“We had 21 runs, but we had 20 hits,” Hagist said. “Our hitters made the adjustment. It’s a good sign.”

“We were doing a lot of things right.”

In addition to his bat, Flint pitched three solid innings, striking out six Lancers.

GCA travels to Traders Point Christian for a Friday game. Edinburgh travels to Morristown for a Mid-Hoosier Conference game on Thursday afternoon.
