Cities plan Arbor Day celebrations

Franklin and Greenwood officials are hosting Arbor Day events this week.

Greenwood Parks and Recreation officials are hosting a tree giveaway Friday with 1,000 trees up for grabs.

Residents can stay in their car for the drive-thru style event. Trees will be given away beginning at 8 a.m. until all trees are gone.

Trees can be picked up at Craig Park Shelter Two or the Greenwood City Center, 300 S. Madison Ave. Staff will be on hand to help get the trees into vehicles.

Trees are bagged in pairs and people can choose up to two tree bundles. Trees available are Red Oak, Redbud, Tulip, Gray Dogwood and Sweet Gum.

Franklin’s Tree Advisory Committee is hosting an Arbor Day Celebration at the Urban Forest on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The Urban Forest is located on South Street across from Greenlawn Cemetery.

The event schedule includes remarks from Committee chair Richard Wertz, Mayor Steve Barnett as well tree planting, pruning and mulching demonstrations.
