UPDATE: Franklin man struck, killed on I-65 in Whiteland

A Franklin man was struck and killed on Interstate 65 in Whiteland Thursday.

The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-65 near the 96.2 mile marker around 11:54 a.m. Thursday, between the Whiteland and Worthsville Road interchanges.

Police say David A. Callahan, 39, of Franklin, exited his vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate after coming to a stop. Witnesses say he walked around the rear of the vehicle and into the travel lanes; that’s when a semi-truck struck him. The driver told police he was unable to avoid hitting Callahan, according to an accident report from Johson County Sheriff’s Office.

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 65 in Whiteland Thursday.

The accident occurred on the northbound lanes of I-65 near the 96 mile marker around 11:54 a.m. Thursday, between the Whiteland and Worthsville Road interchanges. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, which handled the investigation of the accident, did not have further details regarding why the pedestrian was on the interstate or the sequence of events leading to the fatality, Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

Indiana State Police is at the scene to assist with the inspection of a semi-tractor and trailer, which were involved in the accident.

Whiteland Fire Department and Johnson County Coroner’s Office also responded to the accident.

The victim’s identity had not been released as of press time.
