College notebook: Bass delivers for Taylor baseball

Taylor senior baseball player T.J. Bass led the Trojans to three wins in a four-game home series against Marian.

The former Greenwood standout finished 7 of 14 at the plate, belting three home runs in the process, while also driving in seven runs and scoring five himself.

Greenwood

Catcher Lexy Rees had two singles as the UIndy softball squad downed Drury, 3-2. Rees homered and singled in the second game of the doubleheader, a 4-3 victory, with junior teammate Dominique Proctor contributing two singles. Rees drove in three runs and Proctor scored twice in the Greyhounds’ 9-0 shutout of Southwest Baptist.

Pinch hitter Kiley Hankenhoff doubled for Mount St. Joseph softball in a 13-2 triumph at Anderson.

Freshman outfielder Anna Pritchett singled, stole a base and scored a run for Marian in a 3-1 win against Spring Arbor. The Knights then swept visiting Mt. Vernon Nazarene, with Pritchett totaling three hits and two runs.

Center Grove

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Drue Young got the start in a 10-6 victory at Huntington, but didn’t get the decision. He pitched six innings, allowing five hits, three runs and striking out four batters.

Tyler Cerny singled and scored twice for Indiana baseball in its 9-8 win over visiting Ohio in the first game of a doubleheader. The freshman second baseman had a two-run double as the Hoosiers won the second game, 9-2, and then produced a sacrifice fly in IU’s 9-8 win at Ball State.

Senior second baseman Piper Belden singled and stole a base for UIndy softball in its 9-0 blanking of visiting Southwest Baptist.

Mount St. Joseph junior third baseman Kaci Finchum went 4 for 6 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring three herself, as the team won both ends of a softball doubleheader at Anderson.

Junior first baseman Lexi Fair totaled three hits in six at-bats as Southern Indiana softball swept a two-game series at Tennessee State.

Senior Noah Gillard tied for 15th individually with a total of 75-74-72—221 as Indiana men’s golf finished seventh at the Fighting Illini Collegiate.

Cincinnati senior Sam Jean tied for 15th individually with a three-round score of 214 to help the Bearcats finish as team runner-up at the American Athletic Conference championships.

Vincennes freshman golfer Nate Olson tied for 11th overall at his team’s spring invitational, recording scores of 80 and 78.

Indian Creek

Franklin College freshman men’s golfer Braxton Christie tied for the fifth spot individually, carding scores of 80 and 72, to help the Grizzlies to a third-place finish at a nine-team invitational at Earlham.

Freshman pinch runner Emily Todor scored a run for Butler softball in an 11-9 home loss to Indiana State.

Franklin

University of Indianapolis senior Andrew Bixler took seventh in the 3,000-meter men’s steeplechase in a time of 9 minutes, 57.11 seconds at the Indiana Little State Championships. Also taking part was Marian freshman Gregory Heuston, who ran a time of 19.0 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and was 15th in the 400 hurdles in 61.51 seconds.

Franklin College track and field competed at the Rose-Hulman twilight meet, with Eli Cochrane taking seventh in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:00.14 and Drew McGaha placing seventh in the 400 in 51.81 seconds.

Freshman Ava Ray tied for sixth in stroke play competition as UIndy women’s golf placed second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Ray also notched a point for the Greyhounds during match play.

Butler sophomore golfer Damon Dickey tied for 70th overall with a three-round score of 232 as the Bulldogs were seventh of 17 teams at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate.

Whiteland

Freshman shortstop Macy Cornelius totaled two hits and drove in three runs for the Mount St. Joseph softball squad as it won both games of a doubleheader at Anderson. Her squad also swept a doubleheader at Bluffton, with Cornelius providing three hits, including a triple, and scoring two runs.

Sophomore Quentin Gillespie picked up victories in both No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles as Southern Indiana men’s tennis scored a 4-3 win against visiting Lindenwood. The Screaming Eagles downed Eastern Illinois by the same score, with Gillespie dropping his second doubles match and winning in three sets at No. 5 singles.

Freshman pitcher Brandon Stidham worked the final inning for UIndy baseball in a 12-2 win at Southwest Baptist. He surrendered one hit and one walk, and also struck out a batter.

Zach Ricketts posted scores of 82 and 76 to place 17th overall as Franklin College men’s golf finished third out of nine teams at the Earlham Spring Invitational.
