One arrested after SWAT team call-out in Greenwood

A dispute escalated to a SWAT team call-out and an arrest in Greenwood Wednesday night.

Abony N. Mitchell, 39, of Greenwood, was arrested on charges of pointing a firearm, battery with a deadly weapon and intimidation, all felonies, and possession of paraphernalia and resisting law enforcement, both misdemeanors. Formal charges have not yet been filed.

Greenwood police were called to the 2000 block of Belmont Drive at Trotters Pointe Apartments around 11:33 p.m. Wednesday regarding a “commotion” outside an apartment building. Two different calls received by 911 dispatchers reported the commotion and mentioned firearms, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

When officers arrived on the scene, they heard a commotion coming from one of the apartments. A woman who was previously inside the apartment told police the incident escalated when Mitchell allegedly pressed a gun against a juvenile’s head. Mitchell also allegedly made threats to kill the juvenile, the report says.

Several family members were still inside the apartment and were continuing to cause a disturbance. As officers secured the exits, they saw a woman going around the apartment and turning off all of the lights. Police then lit up their lights, and ordered Mitchell to leave, the report shows.

Mitchell reportedly opened the front door one time, but closed it seconds later, police say. She continued to ignore police’s commands and officers could hear the door locking, the report says.

Other people inside the apartment were able to leave through the back door and were escorted by police. One of the witnesses said they tried to unlock the door and let police in twice, but Mitchell reportedly closed and re-locked the door both times, according to the report.

The witness had been at the home when the juvenile had come over to visit. Mitchell had reportedly been drinking and made several insulting comments about the juvenile, according to the report.

The juvenile became upset and said they were going to pop Mitchell’s tires. During this time Mitchell reportedly grabbed a gun, and when the juvenile returned from going outside, Mitchell charged the pistol and pressed it into the juvenile’s forehead, witnesses told police.

An argument ensued, and the witness tried to disarm Mitchell. Mitchell later struck the witness in the head while struggling for the gun, the report says.

The witness was able to get the gun away from Mitchell and handed it to another witness. However, that witness reportedly handed it back to Mitchell. The juvenile left shortly after, and the witness remained in the home as police ordered Mitchell to exit, the report shows.

SWAT officers eventually were able to enter the apartment after an individual opened the door. Mitchell was then taken into custody, according to the report.

Police later received a search warrant for the apartment, and recovered a loaded handgun in the living room and drug paraphernalia in a room belonging to Mitchell. No one else inside the apartment was injured, the report shows.

Mitchell was taken to the Johnson County jail early Thursday morning. Her bond is set at $8,900.
