College notebook: Overfelt going the distance for Hoosiers

Indiana sophomore and former Whiteland runner Claire Overfelt placed second in the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays. Her time of 34 minutes, 0.24 seconds ranks as the ninth-fastest in school history.

Whiteland

Sophomore Bella Jackson finished second in the high jump with a best of 1.76 meters (5 feet, 9½ inches) as Lipscomb women’s track and field competed at the Music City Challenge.

Freshman shortstop Macy Cornelius helped Mount St. Joseph softball win both games of a doubleheader at Manchester, finishing with three hits (including two doubles) and a stolen base.

Center Grove

Marian sophomore golfer Brandon Heffner won medalist honors with a three-round total of 219 at the Crossroads League Championships to lead the Knights to the team title. Freshman teammate Luke Beetz took sixth overall with a 229, while soph Sam Slaughter was 13th with his 234.

The Big Ten men’s championships were halted after two days of competition with, Indiana placing fourth. IU senior Noah Gillard tied for the team’s low score with a 2-over-par total of 144.

Duke senior Erica Shepherd earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference women’s golf team for a third consecutive year. She has an 18-hole stroke average of 73.73 this season with four top 20 finishes.

Cincinnati senior Sam Jean was one of three Bearcats to be named to the All-American Athletic Conference men’s golf team.

Freshman Nate Olson carded scores of 82, 84 and 88 to finish 26th individually as Vincennes men’s golf completed its season at the Region 24 championships.

University of Indianapolis softball won at Missouri-St. Louis, 3-0, led by the three-run double from senior pinch hitter Piper Belden.

Senior catcher Jordyn Rudd produced a total of four hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs to help Northwestern softball sweep a three-game series against visiting Nebraska.

Mount St. Joseph third baseman Kaci Finchum doubled and singled in her team’s 3-1 victory at Manchester, and doubled in a 4-3 win.

Senior first baseman Mike Wyman collected three singles, a double, a home run and three runs driven in as St. Leo baseball won two of three games at Tampa.

Sophomore pitcher Drue Young allowed eight hits in seven innings for Indiana Wesleyan baseball, but didn’t factor in the decision in a 5-4 loss to visiting Spring Arbor.

Anthony Smith contributed three hits overall, including a home run, as Franklin College baseball swept both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Bluffton. Senior pitcher Jackson Young ran his season record to 7-0 with a seven-inning performance in which he allowed eight hits and struck out five. Junior catcher Adam Taylor singled and had a sacrifice fly in FC’s 12-5 loss at Manchester.

Indiana second baseman Tyler Cerny had a solo home run in the baseball team’s 13-2 loss to visiting Maryland.

Indian Creek

Franklin College pitcher Dylan Sprong worked four innings of middle relief to pick up the win in the Grizzlies’ 11-6 triumph at Manchester, giving up two hits and a run while striking out three.

Greenwood

Senior catcher Lexy Rees was one of five University of Indianapolis softball players to be named first team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Freshman outfielder Anna Pritchett singled and scored a run as the Marian softball squad downed host Taylor, 6-1.

Senior T.J. Bass finished with six hits — including three being home runs — as well as six runs scored and seven more driven in as Taylor baseball capped its regular season by winning three of four games at Goshen College.

UIndy sophomore Emily Bonser finished second in the discus with a best throw of 44.79 meters at the Redhawk Invitational at Miami of Ohio. Bonser also placed third in the hammer throw (50.39 meters).

Franklin College junior Mallory Watson ran a time of 13:29.30 to place sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the HCAC women’s track and field championships.

Senior Javan Johnson shot scores of 74, 76 and 75 to finish third individually as the Taylor men’s golf team placed second at the Crossroads League Championships.

Sophomore Damon Dickey tied for 19th place with a three-round total of 223 to help Butler men’s golf finish fifth in the Big East Conference tournament.

Franklin College hosted the HCAC track and field championships, with junior Eli Cochrane and sophomore Drew McGaha part of the Grizzlies’ third-place 4×400 relay, which was timed in 3:27.34.
