Deloris Amick

FRANKLIN

On the morning of May 7, 2023, Deloris Amick passed on to her final reward and reunion in Heaven. She was 102 years old. Proceeding her in death were her parents, her brothers Myron and Norbert Vaught, her husband Ralph N. Amick and a grandson Riley Amick.

Deloris was the daughter of Judson and Lucille (Dennis) Vaught and was born at home on the family farm near Needham on March 5, 1921. Their home got electricity when she was four years old, but they didn’t have indoor plumbing until she was in high school. She went first to Needham schools and then graduated from Franklin High School in 1939. She went on to attend Franklin College and then a business school in Indianapolis.

During the years of World War II, Deloris worked as a secretary in Indianapolis at Pittman Moore and lived in the YWCA, traveling home every weekend on the Interurban train line. After the war, she worked for several companies like Underwood Typewriters and American Red Ball, a moving company.

Deloris met Ralph Amick on a blind date, watching television at a friend’s house. Ralph was an Army veteran who had served in the Battle of the Bulge, and they dated for almost four years before marrying on November 20, 1955 at the Community Congregational Church (now the Hurricane Community Church). Their marriage produced two sons. Tragically, Ralph passed away less than a year after his second son was born.

Deloris moved her infant sons back to the family farm, building a house and raising them alone with the support of her relatives. She was a dedicated and frugal mother who put both of her sons through college. Once the nest was empty though, Deloris enjoyed traveling. She planned and took vacations with many friends and visited 42 states (her favorite Hawaii twice). She also made trips to Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Germany and the Bahamas.

Deloris is survived by her sons, Phil (Debby) Amick and Wendell (Denise) Amick, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Deloris’ later years were happy and comfortable, and the family thanks the staff and her friends at the Morning Pointe and Compass Park communities in Franklin.
