College notebook: Rudd keys Northwestern victory

Senior catcher Jordyn Rudd doubled and homered as Northwestern softball won at Rutgers, 11-2. The former Center Grove player finished the three-game series with three hits as the Wildcats won two games.

Center Grove

Junior first baseman Lexi Fair scored a run for Southern Indiana softball as it rallied for an 8-7 win over Tennessee Tech.

Third baseman Kaci Finchum doubled, drove in a run and scored one herself as Mount St. Joseph defeated visiting Defiance, 4-2, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Senior first baseman Mike Wyman finished with a total of three hits, including a home run, as St. Leo baseball won once in a three-game series at Rollins.

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Drue Young got the start in the team’s Crossroads League tournament opener, working 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and striking out five as the Wildcats downed St. Francis, 7-5.

Freshman Tyler Cerny tripled and scored a run for Indiana in its 11-9 victory at Northwestern. He hit a solo home run in IU’s 8-6 win at Xavier.

Duke senior Erica Shepherd shot a three-round total of 219 to tie for 14th place as the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Championship with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Palm Beach Gardens regional.

Grace College senior Lucy Young carded a three-round total of 250 as her team finished fifth at the Crossroads League women’s golf tournament.

Franklin

Ava Ray tied for 42nd individually with a three-round score of 237 as University of Indianapolis women’s golf placed second of 15 teams at the NCAA Division II East Regional.

Sophomore Ellie Beavins placed 20th individually to help Taylor women’s golf finish second at the Crossroads League tournament.

Indian Creek

Senior pitcher Dustin Sprong picked up the win as Cumberlands won its conference title game against Freed-Hardeman, 4-1. Sprong pitched two innings of relief, allowing no hits, walking two batters and striking out four.

Junior Wyatt Phillips pitched an inning of one-hit relief for UIndy baseball, walking two and striking out one, in the team’s 11-5 victory over Lewis.

Freshman pinch runner Emily Todor scored a run for Butler softball in a 7-2 win at Seton Hall.

Greenwood

Freshman outfielder Anna Pritchett singled twice and scored a run for the Marian softball team as it downed Taylor, 6-4, in the title game of the Crossroads League tournament.

UIndy sophomore Emily Bonser was runner-up in the hammer throw and took sixth in the shot put at the Great Lakes Valley Conference track and field championships.

Senior Lexy Rees homered, singled and scored three runs for UIndy softball in a 10-2 win against Maryville at the GLVC softball tournament. Junior teammate Dominique Proctor singled twice and scored a run for the Greyhounds.

Whiteland

Sophomore Quinten Gillespie was one of two Southern Indiana men’s tennis players to be named Academic All-District for Division I. It’s the second consecutive year Gillespie has earned the honor.

Morehead State senior pitcher Luke Helton got the start and the win in an 11-5 win over Eastern Illinois, working six frames and striking out six.

Sophomore shortstop Macy Cornelius produced a total of three hits, including a double, as Mount St. Joseph softball finished the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Defiance.
