Francis Joseph Cavanaugh, Sr.

Francis Joseph Cavanaugh Sr, also known as Joe, passed away on May 13, 2023, at the age of 91, in Greenwood, Indiana. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.

Joe was born on June 16, 1931 in Indianapolis Indiana, and was a proud graduate of Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis. He went on to obtain a degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University.

An ROTC grad, Joe served as a first lieutenant with the US Army in Korea during the war. He was a loyal patriot and was honored to serve his country.

Coming home from the war, Joe used his pharmacy degree to get a job at Eli Lilly, where he became a lifetime employee working with computers. He was a dedicated worker and loved his job.

Joe was an active member of the United Methodist church, along with his wife Margaret. He found solace and peace in his faith and was grateful for the community it provided.

In his free time, Joe was an avid gardener and loved anything having to do with flowers. He had a green thumb and was able to make anything grow beautifully. He also enjoyed music and singing in choirs with his wife Margaret. Above all, He also loved spending time with his family, who meant everything to him.

Joe is survived by his children Lou, Joe (Melanie), Mary, and Christina Cavanaugh, his grandchildren Joe Cavanaugh, Amanda Anderson (Ben), Jessica Cruz (Sergio), John Cavanaugh (Margarita), Allison Cavanaugh, Josiah Cavanaugh, and Noah Rawlins, and his great-grandchildren Caleb, Thomas, Charles, William, James, Phoebe, Patrick, Remington, and Violet. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his mother Ethel, his father Charles, his sister Mary, and his daughter-in-law Patty.

Joe will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, generosity, and love for his family will never be forgotten.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 17th from 5-8pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service &Crematory, Greenwood Chapel 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood, Indiana. The funeral will be at Southport Presbyterian Church, The Toney Chapel 7525 McFarland Blvd., Indianapolis on Thursday at 10:00am with a visitation from 9:30am to service time.
