Here’s the latest on I-69 construction on the southside

Work on the Interstate 69 project will soon cause commute changes in Marion and Johnson counties.

Mullinix Road between Smith Valley Road and Olive Branch Road has closed, and traffic will be blocked off for about two months. Drivers can follow a detour on Smith Valley Road, Morgantown Road and Olive Branch Road, according to a weekly construction update from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The roundabout is a part of the construction on an interchange at Smith Valley Road and State Road 37, which will become Interstate 69. The interchange will be completed in phases over the summer, with the overpass bridge and southbound and northbound ramps gradually opening to drivers. Other work on I-69 in Johnson County includes paving on the northbound lanes of State Road 37 near Olive Branch Road. Construction crews are also putting up noise barriers on State Road 37 near Bluff Road, INDOT officials say.

In Marion County, 20 minute-stoppages will continue at Harding Street as crews work on removing and rebuilding the Interstate 465 bridge over it. Drivers should also be aware of nighttime left-lane closures on I-465 between Interstate 65 and Interstate 70 as workers continue to prepare to widen I-465 between the two interstates. That project will lead to several changes for commuters next month.

Starting in early June, the eastbound lanes of I-465 between I-65 and I-70 will be fully closed. Drivers can follow a detour from I-70 eastbound to I-65 southbound at the South Split.

The following will also be closed:

• I-70 eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound and eastbound;

• Kentucky Avenue/State Road 67 to and from I-465 eastbound;

• Mann Road to I-465 eastbound;

• Harding Street/State Road 37 to and from I-465 eastbound;

• East Street/U.S. 31 to and from I-465 eastbound.

I-465 westbound closures in July will follow the eastbound closures, but the two directions won’t be closed at the same time, INDOT officials say.
