Courts roundup: Two sentenced on resisting, drug charges

Two people who were facing criminal charges in Johnson County courts have pled guilty and been sentenced for charges including resisting law enforcement and dealing methamphetamine, respectively.

The Daily Journal has previously reported on these cases and is sharing this update to give resolution to our earlier reporting on crime in the community.

Man sentenced for police chase

An Indianapolis man will serve four years on work release on charges stemming from a 2021 police chase.

Charles Jamarr Warren III, 31, was sentenced to four years on two counts resisting law enforcement, one as a Level 5 felony and one as a Level 6 felony, by Johnson County Superior Court 3 Judge Douglas Cummins on March 28. All four years will be on work release, per the terms of a plea agreement, according to online court records.

Warren will serve this sentence after he serves four years in the Indiana Department of Correction for a separate robbery case out of Marion County, online court records show.

Greenwood police attempted to stop a dark-colored SUV near the intersection of U.S. 31 and County Line Road for a minor traffic violation in December 2021. Instead of pulling over, the SUV fled northbound on U.S. 31 at high speeds, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

The vehicle continued onto Indianapolis’ southside at high speeds, and as it approached the red light at Stop 11 Road, the driver — later identified as Warren — ran a red light and struck a silver sedan traveling west on Stop 11. The driver of the sedan was identified as a 23-year-old Bloomington woman, according to the news release.

She was thrown from her sedan and into the southbound lanes of U.S. 31. Police say the woman slid across the pavement before stopping under the front of a stopped SUV, the news release says.

Warren drove his car into the southbound lanes of U.S. 31, jumped a curb and entered the parking lot of a restaurant near the intersection of U.S. 31 and Stop 11 Road. The car then rammed into two parked cars in a parking lot, according to the news release.

Warren exited his car and attempted to flee on foot. He made it across U.S. 31 before Greenwood police “forcibly apprehended” him, the news release says.

Two passengers in Warren’s car did not flee the scene. They were treated by medics and released, according to the news release.

The Bloomington woman whose car was struck was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Five years for meth dealing

A Mooresville woman will serve five years for drug dealing.

Juanita S. King, 38, was sentenced to five years in prison for dealing methamphetamine, a Level 4 felony, by Johnson County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Roesener on April 20. She previously pled guilty to the charge on March 23, and received a 110-day jail credit, according to online court records.

King, along with another woman, Karen E. Hill, were investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in connection to an advertisement located on a known prostitution site. The ad had a phone number and a photo of Hill on it. Deputies recognized Hill immediately and did a criminal history check, according to a probable cause affidavit filed.

Deputies conducted an inquiry into the phone number and found it is associated with King, the affidavit says.

Deputies responded to the ad to discuss prostitution, but the person was unable to meet up because they were waiting for their drug dealer. This person also indicated to deputies they sold drugs, according to the affidavit.

A drug purchase was arranged at a hotel in Greenwood. On the day of the buy, deputies say Hill weighed the meth, but she didn’t have enough to fulfill the purchase request, so she contacted King for more meth. Hill went inside the hotel and came back with more meth, accompanied by King, according to the affidavit.

After the buy was completed, deputies weighed and tested the drugs, the affidavit says.

Charges were also filed against Hill in connection to this investigation. A warrant was issued for Hill’s arrest after she failed to appear in court in December.
