FCHS roundabout construction starts Monday

Construction on the roundabout at Franklin Community High School is expected to start Monday.

Dave O’Mara Contractor Inc. is preparing to close the intersection of County Road 200 North, Simon Road and Commerce Drive to construct the $1.6 million roundabout. The road is expected to re-open before the start of school in August.

It will take the contractor a few hours to get all of the necessary signage and barricades in place, but the intersection is expected to be fully closed by late morning, according to a post on the city of Franklin Facebook page.

The posted detour will be U.S. 31, Branigin Road and Centerline Road. Traffic will not be permitted through the intersection during construction, but access will be maintained to any properties that fall within the closure area, city officials said.

The roundabout is expected to improve safety and make traffic flow more quickly through the busy intersection. At the center of the roundabout will be a tree sculpture by Arlon Bayliss that was commissioned by the Franklin Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council. The council worked with the artist on the concept and design, and raised funds for the $300,000 sculpture.
