College notebook: Christie earns all-HCAC honors

Franklin College men’s golfer Braxton Christie has been named first team all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The freshman, an Indian Creek graduate, finished the season with an 18-hole average of 78.9 and tied for ninth place at the conference tournament.

Pitcher Dylan Sprong worked 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up a hit and striking out two, in Franklin College’s 16-2 loss to top-seeded Birmingham Southern at the Division III NCAA regional.

Wyatt Phillips recorded his fourth save of the season in the University of Indianapolis’ 11-10 victory over Illinois-Springfield in 11 innings at the Division II NCAA Midwest baseball regional. He pitched one inning, allowed a hit and struck out a batter.

Center Grove

Second baseman Tyler Cerny produced a total of three hits, including a pair of doubles, as Indiana University baseball completed the regular season by winning one of three games at Michigan State. The freshman then singled, doubled and scored a run in IU’s 4-3 defeat of Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

Senior pitcher Jackson Young took the loss in Franklin College’s 8-7 loss to La Verne (California) in the opening game of the Division III NCAA regional. Young pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out six. He was also named first team All-HCAC and to the academic all-district team.

Senior catcher Jordyn Rudd went 6 for 10 at the plate, including a home run and two doubles, and drove in a total of four runs, as Northwestern softball defeated Eastern Illinois, Kentucky and Miami of Ohio to advance to the super regional.
