I-465 eastbound closure to begin Friday for I-69 project

Major closures are planned on Interstate 465 as the I-69 Finish Line project ramps up.

An eastbound directional closure for I-465 is expected to begin at 8 p.m. Friday. Motorists traveling south on I-465 approaching the Sam Jones Expressway and Interstate 70 will encounter a reduction from five to four open lanes, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation’s latest I-69 Finish Line update.

Around 9 p.m. Friday, southbound I-465 will be reduced to one lane, with the reduction expected to last a few hours. Between 9 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, crews will gradually add barriers at points where there is no longer access, such as on-ramps along I-465 eastbound.

By 2 a.m. Saturday, the eastbound lanes of I-465 should be fully closed with traffic detoured to I-70, INDOT officials say.

In addition to eastbound I-465 travel lanes, the following ramps will be closed through June 21:

  • Starting between 8 to 9 p.m. Friday: I-70 eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound/eastbound
  • Starting around 9 p.m. Friday, progressing in sequence through 1 a.m. Saturday: Kentucky Avenue/State Riad 67 to/from I-465 eastbound; Mann Road to I-465 eastbound; Harding Street/State Road 37 to/from I-465 eastbound; and East Street/U.S. 31 to/from I-465 eastbound

The official detour for the I-465 eastbound closure will follow I-70 eastbound to Interstate 65 southbound at the South Split. During peak traffic times, traffic may be slower than normal, INDOT officials say.

The I-465 eastbound closure is necessary to allow crews to complete work related to added lane capacity, perform necessary road surface upgrades and place under-pavement pipework to improve drainage. During the entirety of the eastbound directional closure, first responders will have access to and through the project area, according to INDOT.

Other work planned

During the nighttime hours prior to the closure of I-465 planned at 8 p.m. Friday, there will be left lane closures on I-465 between I-65 and I-70 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. These closures are required for median work and to prepare for the directional closures, according to INDOT.

The westbound lanes of I-465 between I-65 and I-70 are also expected to close on or after July 7 for work, officials say.

Further south, motorists accessing southbound State Road 37 from Southport Road will be required to use a temporary ramp until the permanent ramp is complete. In Johnson County, Mullinix Road east of State Road 37 is closed between Smith Valley Road and Olive Branch Road for about two months for roundabout construction, according to INDOT.

Starting on or after Monday, Waverly Park Road immediately south of the relocated Huggin Hollow Road will close to traffic. Both Huggin Hollow Road intersections at Waverly Park Road will remain open during this closure. Access from Huggin Hollow Road to State Road 144 will remain open, officials say. This closure is expected to last three weeks.
