UPDATE: Public safety couple arrested on domestic violence charges

UPDATE NOON SUNDAY

Lawrence Fire Chief Dino Batalis confirmed Joseph Gourley has worked as a firefighter for the department for 10 months. He was put on administrative leave when Batalis learned of the incident, he said Sunday.

UPDATE 10:32 A.M. SUNDAY

IMPD confirmed that Katie Gourley is an eight-year veteran of the department and currently works with the Aggravated Assault Unit. She has been put on administrative leave pending an internal review of the incident, according to a statement from the public affairs office.

IMPD officials said all people, including Katie Gourley, should be presumed innocent until they are proven guilty in a court of law.

Lawrence Fire did not return a request for information about Joseph Gourley’s employment by press time Sunday.

ORIGINAL STORY

A White River Township couple was arrested on domestic battery charges after a reported dispute on Friday evening.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Willow Lakes East subdivision in the 2200 block of Marina Court on the report of a domestic dispute at 11:10 p.m. Friday.

When deputies arrived they investigated and found probable cause to arrest two individuals; Joseph Lee Gourley, 37, and Katie Elizabeth Gourley, 33. They both reside at the Marina Court address, according to sheriff’s office press release.

They were both booked on preliminary charges of Domestic Battery with Injury a Misdemeanor and have both posted bond and have been released from the Johnson County jail.

Joseph Gourley is a firefighter with the Lawrence Fire Department. Katie Gourley is a detective with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The Daily Journal will follow up on this initial story with those agencies for comment.

Sheriff Duane Burgess said further information about the incident will not be released until and unless charges are filed. The reports have been forwarded to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of formal charges.
