A Greenwood woman is dead following a car accident on the city’s southwest side.
First responders were called to the intersection of South Honey Creek Road and Cherry Tree Lane around 12:13 p.m. Monday for a car accident involving a black sedan and a silver truck. The driver of the sedan, Mah H. Zi, 37 of Greenwood, sustained fatal injuries in the crash, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.
Police say the sedan was driving eastbound on Demaree Road approaching Honey Creek Road and the truck was driving northbound on Honey Creek Road approaching the intersection when the accident occurred. The sedan attempted to drive across the intersection onto Cherry Tree Lane before they were struck by the truck, according to the report.
The driver of the truck told police he was close to the intersection when he saw the sedan. He tried to apply hard pressure to his brakes, and tried to avoid hitting the sedan by swerving, but was unable to.
An eyewitness said the sedan failed to stop at a stop sign on Demaree Road before speeding into the intersection with Honey Creek Road. They saw the truck swerve to try to avoid contact with the sedan by going into a turn lane, but were unable to avoid hitting the sedan, the report says.
There is not a stop sign for traffic moving on Honey Creek, but there is one for traffic on Demaree Road and Cherry Tree Lane. Police ultimately ruled the primary factor of the crash as being the sedan’s failure to stop at the stop sign, the report shows.
