IHSAA approves new classification system

In a departure from an earlier proposal that would have classified high schools in four-class sports using fixed enrollment figures, the IHSAA Excecutive Committee instead decided to amend its existing percentage-based system. Instead of schools being spread equally across four classes (25% each), they will be broken up using a 20-25-25-30 ratio — thereby shrinking Class 4A by about 20 schools and making Class A larger — starting with the next reclassification cycle in 2024-25.

With approximately 400 schools participating in basketball, volleyball and other four-class sports, the move could have a seismic impact on some local schools. Greenwood and Roncalli, which ranked 82nd and 91st, respectively, in enrollment a year ago, will likely drop down to Class 3A under the new system. Indian Creek (ranked 171st) will probably remain on the high side of the 2A/3A cutoff but be among the smallest schools in Class 3A.
