Greenwood man arrested after standoff with SWAT

A Greenwood man was arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at a woman before an hour-long standoff with police.

Robert Lee Clarke, 42, was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 Felony; intimidation with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 Felony, pointing a firearm, a Level 6 Felony; and interfering with public safety.

Greenwood Police responded to a call at the Thornton’s Gas Station on U.S. 31 in Greenwood at 7 p.m. Wednesday. There, a woman said Clarke was living at her house and she had asked him to leave, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

She said Clarke got angry when he was packing up, and he allegedly pointed a pistol at her and threatened to kill her and another relative. He later dropped the weapon and began punching the wall, the report says. That was when she left the house.

Police first attempted to contact Clarke by calling his cell phone several times, which he did not answer. They then engaged the SWAT team and set up outside the house on the 1300 block of East Murry Street in the Greenwood Estates neighborhood, the report says.

Greenwood SWAT made several announcements over a PA system asking Clarke to exit the house with his hands up. It was believed Clarke had multiple firearms in the house, according to what the woman told police, the report says.

The SWAT team was outside the house for about an hour when they obtained a search warrant to enter the home. Officers broke windows on the northern side of the house and inserted tear gas inside, which then drove Clarke outside, according to the report.

Clark was arrested soon after exiting the house. Upon questioning, he told police he was angry because he thought his dog was possibly sold to a friend. He said he was drunk and laying down in the bedroom when he was asked to leave the house, which he said made him angry, the report says. He told police he did not point a firearm at anyone inside the house.

Officers conducted a search of the home and found a rifle, three pistols, multiple magazines and several dozen rounds of .22LR rifle ammunition and 9 mm ammunition.

Clarke was booked into the Johnson County jail, where he is held on $15,400 bond.
