Johnson County launches web page for tornado debris cleanup

Clean-up and recovery continues in White River Township after the June 25 tornado.

Here’s some information about debris cleanup and how to help:

Johnson County debris cleanup

The Johnson County Highway Department launched a website for residents to get information on debris cleanup at jchighway.com/june-25-tornado.

The county is providing curbside pickup of woody debris which includes trees, shrubs and bushes, starting over the next few days.

Residents are instructed to place woody debris by their curb or at the edge of the road, but not in the roadway. Woody debris must be separated from general construction and non-woody debris in order for it to be picked up. Affected residents do not need to register online for curbside pickup of woody debris. The county will not enter private property to remove debris.

The overall declaration area has been divided into three sub-areas, with one contractor assigned to each sub-area, the highway department web page says. Three contractors will be taking several trips through each sub-area over the next few weeks. It may take some time for the contractors to complete a pass-through for each area, the website says.

The county has also placed dumpsters in neighborhoods affected by the storms. A map of the location of these dumpsters can also be found on the web page. Citizens are responsible for taking the general construction and non-woody debris to the dumpsters. Contractors will not pick up this type of debris.

Woody debris and electronics should not be placed in the dumpsters. Residents should contact Johnson County Recycling District at 317-738-2546 regarding electronics.
