Janice Weir Krull

FRANKLIN

Janice Weir Krull, 90, of Franklin, Indiana, died June 23, 2023 after a brief illness.

Krull was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Hanover, Indiana, to Dewey and Gladys Weir. She graduated from Sullivan High School in 1950, then attended DePauw University briefly before graduating from Hanover College in 1954. She received her master’s degree from Indiana University in 1974.

After college, she served as an elementary school teacher in Indiana and Ohio. For years afterward, many former students would tell her children that Krull was the finest teacher they ever had.

Following her teaching career, she worked for the Indiana Department of Mental Health as a case manager. What linked her career choices was a concern for people—particularly people who faced unfair obstacles that often were beyond their control.

Her passion for justice was keen. Following college, she volunteered with the League of Women Voters and participated in the early days of the civil rights movement. Her sense that all people deserved to be treated equally and with respect never left her.

She was devoted to her three children and her five grandchildren, whose only competition for her affection was a series of pets. She loved dogs and cats and rarely had fewer than two or three living with her. An avid birdwatcher, Krull also drew strength and solace from being outdoors.

Few things gave her greater pleasure than traipsing through a lovely, wooded area, binoculars in hand, while she searched for a type of bird she had not yet seen.

Krull is survived by her son John (Jenny) Krull of Indianapolis, daughter Leslie (Dwight) Cheu of Glenmont, New York, grandson Ryan (Jennifer) Cheu of San Francisco, California, granddaughter Lindsay (Dan) Cheu of Seattle, Washington, grandson John Cheu of Durham, North Carolina, granddaughter Erin Krull of Boston, Massachusetts, grandson Ian Krull of Indianapolis and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Judy Weir Vandergriff, her son Andrew C. Krull and her grandson Simon C. Cheu.

A memorial service in her honor will take place at the Greenwood Presbyterian Church on July 8 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Janice Krull’s memory be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Albany, 362 State Street, Albany, NY 12210 or Planned Parenthood Federation of America, PO Box 97166, Washington DC 20090-7166.
