Public can visit patrol car, make donations for fallen ISP trooper from Franklin

The community is coming together to remember a local Indiana State Police Trooper who was killed in the line of duty during a police pursuit.

Trooper Aaron N. Smith, 33, was killed following a vehicle crash on the Ronald Reagan Parkway, north of Interstate 70, in Hendricks County on Wednesday. Smith, who lived in Franklin, was a 2008 graduate of Whiteland Community High School.

He is survived by his wife, Megan, a teacher at the Clark-Pleasant Early Learning Center.

Smith, a five-year ISP veteran, was assisting other troopers on Ronald Reagan Parkway with a pursuit of a stolen SUV on Wednesday night when was struck by the suspect vehicle and critically injured while trying to deploy stop sticks. He later died at an Indianapolis hospital.

Two suspects remain in custody at the Hendricks County jail. Formal charges are pending.

Public can visit Smith’s car

ISP officials are welcoming and encouraging people to visit Smith’s patrol car outside of the Indiana State Police Indianapolis Post.

The post is located at 8620 E. 21st St., Indianapolis, IN 46219.

“On behalf of the family, friends and fellow troopers, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for all the support and messages we have received,” ISP spokesperson Sgt. John Perrine said in a Facebook post Friday.

Donations

An official memorial fund for Smith has been established to benefit his family at Indiana Members Credit Union. The fund is listed under “Aaron Smith Memorial Fund.”
