James “Jim” Edward Gardner

James Edward “Jim” Gardner, 95, of Greenwood, IN passed away Thursday, July 6, 2023 at his home in the Greenwood Village Retirement Community in Greenwood, IN.

He was born May 22, 1928, in Indianapolis, IN to Edward and Mary “Gussie” Gardner. He married Barbara “Bobbi” (Enochs) Gardner on March 11, 1950, in Indianapolis. Bobbi preceded him in death on June 16, 2018.

Jim graduated from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis in 1946 and then served in the United States Army Air Force as a Communications Specialist and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was discharged from the service as a Sergeant in 1949.

After discharge, he went to work for AT&T/ Indiana Bell Telephone as an Equipment Maintenance Technician. Over his nearly 40 year career with Indiana Bell, he held many positions and retired as a Manager of Operations Administration in 1989.

Upon retirement from Indiana Bell, Jim operated his own lawn mower repair business for nearly 25 years, alongside his youngest son, Scott.

Jim and Bobbi liked to travel by car and visited many locations across the country. Favorites were anyplace with a casino, including Las Vegas and Florida.

In addition to traveling, Jim liked to watch the Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts and every cowboy movie ever made. He also considered himself to be the Bingo King at his retirement community and he also enjoyed attending New Hope Church with his family, and spoiling his dog, Sandy.

Survivors include sons Michael Gardner (Deanna) of Franklin, IN, Stephen Gardner (Billi) of Indianapolis, IN, and daughter-in-law Carol Gardner of Indianapolis, IN, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbi Gardner, son, Scott Gardner, and brother Harold Whitson.

A visitation for Jim will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home (1977 S SR 135, Greenwood, IN, 46143) from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The funeral service will be on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at 2:00 pm.
