Here’s what’s happening on I-69 this week

Work will continue along State Road 37 in Johnson County this week as workers continue to take steps toward the road’s transition to Interstate 69.

Northbound lanes of I-69 merge to one lane near the County Road 144 interchange to allow for bridge and mainline work, a restriction that will be in place for the remainder of the construction season. Continuing north of the interchange into Johnson County, the road returns to two travel lanes, but shifts to the opposite side of the divided highway between Smith Valley Road and Banta Road. There, a concrete barrier separates northbound and southbound lanes. That shift will continue through October, according to a weekly construction update from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

In Marion County, a westbound lane closure on Interstate 465 continues between Interstate 65 and Interstate 70 on Indianapolis’s southwest side. Since the closure began earlier this month, construction crews have made progress with bridge overlays, road surface upgrades, drainage pipe installation and earthwork on medians, INDOT officials say.

During the closure, westbound I-465 and the following ramps are closed to traffic:

• I-65 to I-465 westbound;

• U.S. 31/East Street to I-465 westbound;

• Harding Street/State Road 37 to I-465 westbound;

• Kentucky Avenue/State Road 67 to I-465 westbound.

The official detour follows northbound I-65 to westbound I-70 at the South Split. The westbound lanes will reopen in late July, but the southbound U.S. 31/East Street ramp to I-465 westbound will be closed until next year, INDOT officials say.

Elsewhere in Marion County, Belmont Avenue is closed permanently to through traffic between Banta Road and Epler Avenue. Drivers have local access south of the closure from Banta Road, and north of the closure on Epler Avenue. A new alignment of Belmont Avenue will open next year. Construction work on Bluff Road, Meridian Street and Harding Street may cause 20-minute stoppages on Bluff Road, Meridian Street and Harding Street between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., INDOT officials say.
