UPDATE: ISP trooper stable after accidental shooting at Greenwood airport

State troopers released more information regarding an accidental shooting at Indy South Greenwood Airport Monday.

The trooper who accidentally shot himself was a tactical flight officer for the Indiana State Police. Following a patrol flight, the trooper was exiting an ISP helicopter when his gun discharged and struck him in the upper leg, said Sgt. John Perrine, an ISP spokesperson.

Other troopers immediately applied two tourniquets to the injured trooper’s wounds. Medics from the Greenwood Fire Department transported the trooper to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in stable condition, Perrine said.

An Indiana State Police trooper is in stable condition after he accidentally shot himself at the Greenwood airport Monday.

The trooper accidentally shot himself around 11:30 a.m. Monday while he was finishing an operation at the Indiana State Police Hanger, which is located at the Indy South Greenwood Airport, 897 Airport Parkway, Greenwood. He was taken to a local hospital where he was in stable condition as of Monday afternoon, said Sgt. John Perrine, an ISP spokesperson.

“All indications are he’s going to be OK,” Perrine said.

The accidental shooting is under investigation, and no further information can be released at this time, Perrine said.
