A man is in police custody in Kentucky after police say he robbed a Franklin gas station and fled the state.

Nathaniel Smith, 34, is being held on criminal charges in Bowling Green, Kentucky, after being arrested by the Kentucky State Police Friday morning. Smith, of Macon, Georgia, is expected to be transported back to Indiana in the coming days, according to a Franklin Police Department news release.

Franklin Police were called to an armed robbery at the Phillips 66 gas station, 400 E. Jefferson St., around 10:51 p.m. Thursday. The suspect in the robbery was described as a Black male with a goatee, who was wearing a baseball hat, white tee shirt, black shorts and black Nike slides, the news release says.

Police say the suspect fled the scene of the crime in a white Toyota Corolla with an undetermined amount of cash.

Detectives were quickly able to identify the suspect as Smith, and were able to pinpoint his location. He was subsequently arrested by Kentucky State Police on unrelated charges, the news release says.

Smith is being held at the Warren County jail in Kentucky pending formal charges and his extradition to Indiana. He was booked into the jail at 5:43 a.m. Friday on charges of operating on a suspended or revoked license, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and being a fugitive, according to online jail records.
