Gary Allen “Pete” Sims

Gary Allen “Pete” Sims of Whiteland, Indiana, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 10, 2023, at the age of 69. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Pete was born in Franklin, Indiana on November 24, 1953, the son of the late Kellus and Mary (Alford) Sims. Pete leaves behind his beloved wife Sheri L. (Schultz) Sims of 47 years of Whiteland, IN, his two children Chad A. Sims (Lindsay) of McCordsville, IN and Ryan L. Sims (Jolene) of Alexandria, VA, and his three grandchildren Kylie, Maddox, and Beckett. His memory will live on through them and through the countless lives he touched throughout his life.

He is survived by his sisters Linda Turk (Ron) of Indianapolis, IN and Mary Sicking (David) of Greencastle, IN. He is preceded in death by his brothers Garnet (Frances) Sims, Kenneth “Bugs” Sims and James Sims.

Pete was known for his huge personality, infectious laugh, and his ability to light up any room he entered. He had a heart of gold and always put the needs of others before his own. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Pete graduated from Greenwood Community High School in 1973 and received his degree 30 years later from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2003. Pete had a successful career in the specialty paper and packaging industry for 47 years.

Pete was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was dedicated to his community and instilled a sense of public service in his children to make the world a better place. As a local politician, running for multiple county-wide offices he was committed to driving positive change. He was a sports fanatic and was involved with Whiteland youth sports as a Coach, umpire, and parent. Pete was a huge supporter of all Indiana University sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys, auto racing, and his beloved New York Yankees. Pete’s love for music and specifically Elvis Presley drove his nickname of “The King” to many of his friends.

Pete always opened his home to those in need and loved conversing about life. His approachable demeanor is why there was never a stranger to him. Pete was an avid supporter of bringing Autism Awareness and help to the special needs communities. He had a very special bond and love language with his non-verbal grandson Maddox whom he loved more than life.

Services will be Thursday August 17, 2023 at 4PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com Friends may call Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 4PM until 8PM at the mortuary and from 3PM until service time on Thursday. A reception will follow the service at the mortuary on Thursday. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Pete’s life.
