Upgraded section of Worthsville Road reopens to traffic

Another section of Worthsville Road has reopened in Greenwood.

Worthsville Road from Averitt Road to Honey Creek Road has officially opened to traffic, the city of Greenwood announced Saturday. Drivers should expect to see crews finalizing seeding, landscaping and final restorations over the next few weeks, officials said.

This section of the road had been closed as part of the Worthsville Road project, a years-long project to rebuild the east-west road throughout the city. Construction of the section from Averitt Road to Honey Creek Road, considered Section 2 of the project, began last spring at a cost of $9.6 million.

As part of the construction, crews eliminated two 90-degree turns that connect Worthsville Road to Stones Crossing Road. Turns from Worthsville Road to Donica Road and Donica Road to Stones Crossing Road were also reconstructed as s-curves. Roundabouts were also built at both Averitt Road and Worthsville Road and Honey Creek and Stones Crossing Road, officials previously said.

With the completion of Section 2, there is now only one section of the Worthsville Road project remaining: Section 1. This section, which is from Honey Creek Road to State Road 135, is still in the planning phases, officials said.
