Greenwood domestic dispute ends in fatal shooting

Fights between a Greenwood man and his father allegedly culminated in a shooting late Monday.

Jacob M. Moran, 22, was taken into custody by the Michigan State Police just across the Indiana-Michigan state line Tuesday morning. He is suspected by Greenwood police of shooting his father, 45-year-old Greenwood resident Shaun M. Moran, on Monday evening.

At about 6:45 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a home on the 400 block of Euclid Avenue on a report of a person shot. When they arrived they found, Shaun Moran dead of an apparent gunshot wound in the home’s garage, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

The Johnson County Coroner’s Office ruled Shaun Moran’s death as a homicide caused by a single gunshot wound.

Police said in a news release that Jacob Moran is a suspect in the shooting. It was reported that he was angry with Shaun Moran about being told to move out of the home.

On Tuesday morning, GPD asked for the public’s help in finding Jacob Moran, who was considered “armed and dangerous” at the time. They also released a photo of his car taken by a FLOCK License Plate Reader camera on Monday night near West Southport Road and Bluff Road on Indianapolis’ southside.

After Jacob Moran was taken into custody, GPD said in an update that they were in direct communication with the Michigan State Police and are working with them on the case.

The shooting was the third time GPD had been called to the home that day. Court documents show that Jacob Moran had allegedly assaulted his father twice in the hours before the shooting.

Jacob Moran was charged Tuesday with residential entry, a Level 6 felony, and two counts of domestic battery both as a Level 6 felony and a misdemeanor, for the incidents. Charges for the shooting have not yet been filed.

At around 12:58 p.m. Monday, Greenwood police were called to the home on Euclid Avenue for a family dispute. Shaun Moran told officers that he was physically assaulted by Jacob Moran, who had left the scene before police arrived, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Johnson County Superior Court 3.

Shaun Moran told police Jacob Moran had been staying at the home for about 1.5 weeks and he was reportedly homeless. He and Jacob Moran had been estranged and not in contact for about five years until his son asked if he could stay with him.

Since Jacob Moran arrived at the home, his father told police he had been causing issues, including being verbally aggressive and disrespectful of property. This led to a verbal argument between the two on Monday, the affidavit says.

Police say Shaun Moran told Jacob Moran he was no longer welcome at the house and asked for him to leave with his belongings. Jacob Moran reportedly asked him what his problem was and began to physically assault him in front of witnesses, according to the affidavit.

One of the witnesses tried to pull Jacob Moran off of his father but was unsuccessful. A second witness was able to pull him off of Shaun Moran, who later called police. Jacob Moran then left in a white BMW, the affidavit shows.

Shaun Moran would later tell police Jacob Moran did not have a key to the home, and said that if he returned, he wanted him trespassed from the property, according to the affidavit. Officers told Shaun Moran to call the police immediately if Jacob Moran returned.

At about 4:38 p.m., 911 dispatchers received another call from the home where yelling could be heard in the background. Jacob Moran had reportedly broken into the home, assaulted Shaun Moran and left the scene again after he realized police had been called.

Shaun Moran told police he was sitting inside the living room when he heard a loud commotion near the rear of the home. Jacob Moran had allegedly made his way in, pushing his way past another witness, before yelling and striking Shaun Moran, causing injuries to his face, according to the affidavit.

A witness pulled Jacob Moran off his father, and the witness and Shaun Moran were able to force him out the front door. Jacob Moran then reportedly said, “I’ll be back with my piece” — referring to a gun. He then left the scene, the affidavit shows.

Officers searched the area for Jacob Moran but were unable to find him. When they spoke with Shaun Moran, he said he had a gun of his own “locked and loaded” in a safe upstairs, according to the affidavit.
