Local lawmakers seek interns for 2024 legislative session

Local lawmakers are looking for interns to join them at the Indiana Statehouse for next year’s legislative session.

Interns in the House of Representatives will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes in mid-March. Internships can unlock rewarding career opportunities, State Rep. Robb Greene, R-Shelbyville, said in a news release.

“This internship really helps students gain experience, hone their skills and connect to a full-time job,” Greene said.

House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns will work alongside legislators and staff on issues and tasks impacting all Hoosiers, State Rep. Michelle Davis, R-Whiteland, said in the news release.

“Many of our interns have used this experience to launch successful careers in media relations, public affairs, law and more,” Davis said.

Students can apply for internships in a variety of departments. Students with majors related to legislative operations, policy and communications are encouraged to apply, State Rep. Peggy Mayfield, R-Martinsville, said in the news release.

“It’s always great to see local students take advantage of this opportunity work with lawmakers and state officials in a professional environment like the legislative session,” Mayfield said. “For many of them, this internship led to promising careers in both state government and the private sector.”

Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full-time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student’s college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

“With a House internship, college students and recent graduates will learn a lot while also applying their classroom knowledge in a professional setting,” State Rep. Craig Haggard, R-Mooresville, said in the news release. “They can use their internship to help launch their careers and make their resumes stand out with employers. With interviews happening right now, it’s time to go online and apply.”

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
