Jiffy Lube offering free catalytic converter protection in Indiana

An Indiana car maintenance business has indefinitely extended a program designed to tackle increasing catalytic converter thefts.

Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s Catalytic Converter Identification Initiative will now be in effect indefinitely statewide in an effort to combat increasing trends of catalytic converter thefts and support vehicle safety across Indiana. The locally-owned company operates more than 50 service centers across the state, including locations in Whiteland and Greenwood.

Through the Catalytic Converter Identification Initiative, Hoosiers who visit a Jiffy Lube store can opt to have their technician engrave the last eight digits of the vehicle’s vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the catalytic converter and add a stripe of high-temp paint on the catalytic converter. The strip of paint adds an extra layer of protection to any vehicle, and is completely complimentary with no purchase necessary, according to a Jiffy Lube of Indiana news release.

Service is available now and will remain in effect indefinitely, the news release says.

“As a locally owned business, Jiffy Lube of Indiana is committed to serving its communities across the Hoosier state,” said Steve Sanner, president and owner of Jiffy Lube of Indiana. “We’ve connected with law enforcement around Indiana to better understand the need, and we feel this is a great opportunity for us to help address a growing, ongoing problem in Indiana and across the country. As experts in car care, it is our primary goal to be the community’s go-to destination for all maintenance, protection and service needs for their vehicles.”

Catalytic converter thefts across the U.S. have skyrocketed over the last few years. In just two years, catalytic converter thefts increased 1,000%, according to data compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Stealing a catalytic converter can take as little as 30 seconds, and the parts have continued to remain prime targets for theft thanks to elevated prices on the precious metals they contain, according to the news release.

Jiffy Lube representatives say they were the first business to offer this service permanently across Indianapolis and are now the first to offer it statewide, which is different from other campaigns in the past.

The catalytic converter identification service is now in full operation at all Jiffy Lube of Indiana stores and is indefinitely available to any customer requesting the service — no purchase or appointment necessary, the news release says.
