Seven local students qualify for National Merit Scholarship semifinals

Seven Johnson County students were named National Merit Semifinalists.

The students are among more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide and include Alston Lin and Nasser Sanwari from Center Grove High School, Emma Baker and Christopher Remetta from Greenwood High School, Ethan Bergman and Monica Sayler from Franklin Community High School and Edward Johnson, a homeschooled student from Greenwood.

The National Merit Semifinalists are selected among the 1.3 million juniors who took the PSAT, the precursor to the SAT exam. They reached this stage in the competition by scoring high on the exam. They now have a chance to advance to the finalist round by submitting an application, including an essay, a list of activities and volunteer work.

Roughly half of the semifinalists are chosen for the finalist round, and finalists will then have a chance to earn college scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Those scholarships are announced in the spring.
