Greenwood community comes together to ‘push-in’ new fire engine

City officials, firefighters and community members came together at Greenwood Fire Station 94 on Monday to ‘push-in’ a new fire engine.

Push-in ceremonies are based on the idea that it takes a community to support a fire department. The ceremony celebrates a fire service tradition from the time before gas-powered engines when horse-drawn engines had to be backed or “pushed” in the firehouse bay for the return to service, according to the Greenwood Fire Department.

The new Engine 94 pushed-in Monday is a 2023 Seagrave Marauder cab purchased through 911 Fleet and Fire Equipment of Florence, Kentucky, in January 2021. The recently delivered engine comes equipped with a 750-gallon water tank and a two-stage, maximum of 1,250 gallon-per-minute Waterous fire pump, said Tyler Swardson, public information officer for the Greenwood Fire Department.

Officials say the new engine will be primarily serving the east side of Greenwood near the warehouses and Interstate 65. It was outfitted with graphics by a local company, Slyfox Creative of Greenwood, and with audio electronics by ERS Wireless in Indianapolis, Swardson said.

“GFD would like to give thanks to the community for their support in getting the new piece of apparatus and to all of our partners for working together to get the new rig on the road,” he said. Swardson also gave special thanks to GFD Lt. Dave Johnson for “his long hours, lengthy road trips and many phone calls with vendors over the last few months assuring every detail is covered.”

Along with the new engine, a new ladder/tiller truck was ordered with expected delivery later this year. In recent months, GFD has also ordered two additional Seagrave fire engines with the same Marauder cab, Swardson said.
