Police: Franklin man accidentally shot himself at skate park

A Franklin man is recovering from a non-fatal gunshot wound following an accidental shooting reported Tuesday at the city skate park.

Detectives were called to Johnson Memorial Health to investigate the circumstances surrounding the gunshot at 8:33 p.m., a Franklin police report says.

The man told police he and a friend had been showing each other their guns at the skate park, when he accidentally shot himself in the leg with his friend’s gun, the report says. The man did not realize the gun was loaded and the safety was off and he pulled the trigger, shooting himself in the leg, he told police.

After he shot himself, the man’s friend drove him to the hospital, the report says.

Both men reported they hadn’t been in an argument and cooperated with the investigation, the report says.

No charges are being recommended, as the shooting is ruled accidental, said Kirby Cochran, police chief.
