Letter to the Editor: Indiana GOP should move past Trump

To the Editor:

Brian Howey had a column in the Aug. 24 edition of the Daily Journal titled “Relationship between Trump and GOP Hoosiers — it’s complicated.” Really?

“Complicated” like when somebody’s teen-age kid vandalizes something and people staunchly believe the right thing to do is hold them accountable but when it’s their own child who caused harm, then suddenly there’s every excuse under the sun to avoid accountability? Because in the case of former President Donald Trump’s MAGA supporters and much of the rest of the GOP, that’s precisely their position on Trump’s 91 criminal charges. How else do you explain Trump’s criminality being acceptable to 64% of Republicans?

Mr. Howy’s column noted several Indiana GOP candidates running for office who still defend and praise Trump, as well as perpetuate the lie that Trump is being treated unfairly by our legal system. These Indiana politicians know full well that Trump’s actions and behaviors are at best devious and corrupt and at worst criminally treasonous. They know this. By fostering a false narrative that our U.S. Department of Justice is corrupt, they continue the assault on our legal system which Trump started almost immediately upon securing the presidency.

But what is particularly disgusting about Jim Banks, Mike Braun, Suzanne Crouch, and others pandering to Trump supporters and spewing inflammatory rhetoric such as “war on conservatives” and “weaponized DOJ” is this: they have total disregard for the lives lost due to Trump’s behavior. They also show a disrespect for both our Constitution and Indiana’s voters.

If the DOJ is “weaponized” against Trump and his co-conspirators, it’s because they gave them ammunition by the gross. They refused to accept what they knew to be a fair defeat but rather attempted to seize power with a violent coup. Trump and others put themselves squarely in the DOJ’s sights.

By perpetuating a false narrative against the DOJ and how unfairly Trump is being treated, Indiana’s candidates foster the ideology of criminal over country.

Out of curiosity, would 64% of Republicans cry foul if the DOJ went after Biden for doing the same thing? If he stole classified documents and did God only knows what with them? Asked Georgia’s Secretary of State to “find” the votes he needed to win? Would it be okay if Biden openly called for the execution of our military leaders? Or would Republicans just sit back and not scream for the DOJ to do their job?

Really?
