College notebook: Edens enjoys record day in debut meet

Aquinas College swimmer Amelia Edens made her freshman debut a memorable one by setting three individual school records in her first meet, the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky.

The former Whiteland standout swam a time of 1 minute, 1.52 seconds in the 100 backstroke, placing fifth overall. She also achieved new Aquinas standards in the 200 backstroke (2:14.38) and the 200 individual medley (2:17.92) and as part of four different relays.

Another former Warrior, Lindsey Wilson junior Avery Herring, finished sixth in the 400 IM (5:06.15) and was part of the second-place 800 freestyle relay.

Whiteland

Indiana sophomore Claire Overfelt came in 55th at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational women’s cross country meet in a time of 21 minutes, 1.7 seconds.

Taylor University volleyball lost in three sets to visiting Bethel despite the 12 kills of outside hitter Sarah Scott. She also had 11 kills and four digs in the team’s loss at Spring Arbor.

Center Grove

Butler junior volleyball player Grace Boggess had four kills and a service ace in the team’s 3-0 sweep at Villanova.

Junior defensive specialist Rylie McMahen provided nine digs and two assists as Winthrop volleyball scored a four-set victory against Radford.

Middle hitter Juliana Weems had five kills for Concordia Ann Arbor in its four-set loss to Aquinas College, and five kills and five digs in a three-set sweep at Rochester (Michigan).

Junior defensive specialist Ashley Eck had 17 digs and six assists for Eckerd College in a three-set loss at Embry-Riddle.

Hillsdale College defensive back Matt Soderdahl had four tackles in his team’s first win of the season, a 40-18 decision over Northwood.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Tayven Jackson completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 113 yards as Indiana football lost at Maryland, 44-17.

Freshman punter Nolan Foley averaged 32.6 yards on his five punts, twice pinning the opponent inside the 20-yard line, as Indiana Wesleyan ran its record to 5-0 with a 48-12 victory over Siena Heights.

Kansas redshirt freshman defensive end Austin Booker made seven tackles in the Jayhawks’ 40-14 loss at Texas.

Saint Leo junior golfer Alex Heck tied for 29th individually with a three-round score of 220 as the Lions took part in the Shark Invitational.

Senior Noah Gillard fired a three-round total of 214 as Indiana men’s golf tied for second of 14 teams at the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend.

Franklin

Marian senior tight end Drew Byerly had a 61-yard touchdown reception in the Knights’ 44-17 home win over Lawrence Tech.

Freshman defensive back Zach Reese made two tackles for DePauw in its 66-7 romp at Oberlin.

Wyatt McCullough placed 23rd in 26:29.6 and teammate Eli Cochrane ran a 28:36.5 as Franklin College men’s cross country took part in the Nike XC Town Twilight meet in Terre Haute.

Junior Ellie Beavins took fourth individually with scores of 76 and 75 as Taylor women’s golf placed first of nine teams at the Battle at Blackthorn in South Bend.

Sophomore Ava Ray made her first hole-in-one on her way to tying for 22nd individually with a three-round total of 229 as UIndy placed first of 14 teams at the William Beall Classic.

IUPUI volleyball lost at Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-1, despite the nine digs, three assists and two service aces of senior Brooke Phillips.

Indian Creek

Marian junior Luci Woodrum ran a time of 20:59.4 to help the women’s cross country squad finish sixth at the Louisville Invitational.

Greenwood

Wabash College linebacker Gavin Ruppert tied for the team lead in tackles with seven as the Little Giants football team won at Ohio Wesleyan, 31-13.

IU East junior Julia Arruda finished 49th overall in the women’s race at the Nike XC Town Twilight meet with a time of 25:54.0. Franklin College senior Mallory Watson finished in 27:28.7, taking 73rd.

Sophomore defensive specialist Melia Gorrell had seven digs and an assist for Wheeling in a four-set loss at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Gorrell added 15 digs and an assist in a four-set triumph over Frostburg State.

Junior libero Anna Cruser finished with eight digs for Kentucky Christian in its 3-0 loss to Brenau. The team then lost to Milligan in three sets with Cruser good for six digs.

Senior Joy Maze had 11 kills, 11 digs and a service ace as Manchester volleyball won at Earlham in straight sets. She had 14 kills, eight digs and four aces in a home defeat of St. Mary’s.

Roncalli

Sophomore cornerback Michael Hegwood (Greenwood) had three tackles and broke up a pass as Wabash College football won at Ohio Wesleyan, 31-13. Junior defensive lineman Owen Volk contributed two tackles in the victory.

Grace Hegwood (Greenwood) had nine kills, 14 digs and an assist as UIndy volleyball won in four sets at William Jewell.
